Even if you’ve appeared in court before, receiving a court summons can still be a little unnerving. No matter what kind of case you’re being summoned for, the consequences can have dramatic effects on your life, from everything from job prospects to dating and even your ability to rent a home or apartment! This is why it’s important to retain professional legal counsel for a court summons, even if you think you can defend yourself. A lawyer is on your side and can be your advocate in the often confusing legal system.

This one is located at 796 Parkway Boulevard, Broomall, Pennsylvania 19008. There is free parking available, but this court shares a building and parking area with other local businesses, so it’s important to arrive earlier than your summons time, to ensure you have a place to park. What Kinds of Cases Are Handled By Magisterial District Courts?

Major cases, such as a large lawsuit or a criminal jury trial aren’t heard by these types of courts. Instead, the court handles the preliminary hearings for criminal cases, including domestic assault and assault and batters, firearms charges, DUI, or robberies.

Other types of cases are civil and can include minor lawsuits, where the amount of the lawsuit is less than $12,000. These kinds of cases are considered “small claims.” Cases where there is a dispute between landlords and tenants, including evictions, are also handled by these courts, as are disputes about retrieving property.

If you have a traffic citation, such as reckless driving or excessive speeding you also may be summoned to court.

Do I Need a Lawyer for a Court Summons?

Any time that you have charges or you’re summoned to court, it’s always in your best interest to hire a lawyer. In criminal cases, the laws can change and only a professional attorney can help you navigate through the changes and protect your rights and freedoms. If you are being sued, a lawyer can help reduce the number of damages, or may even be able to prove that the lawsuit is unfounded, which can save you a bundle! Plus, lawyers are on your side – not anyone else’s.
