District courts handle a variety of different cases. If you are involved in a landlord-tenant dispute, your case will be heard here, as will be a small claims case or minor lawsuit. Small claims are those with less than $12,000 of damages requested.

Preliminary matters for criminal cases are also handled by Magisterial Courts. These can include domestic violence and other assault and battery matters, DUI/ DWI cases, and any other criminal matters that occurred in the county.

Traffic matters such as including reckless driving, driving without a license, speeding in excess of 30 miles per hour over the speed limit, and failure to stop at stop signs/red lights may be heard before the court. Sometimes you’ll receive a summons before the court, especially if you’ve had multiple traffic offenses.

Do I Need a Lawyer For a Summons?

For any legal matter, hiring a lawyer is always best. Some of the laws surrounding your case may be complicated, and you’ll likely have questions. A professional advocate, one that’s dedicated to representing your case, is important. You may be better able to protect your position in a civil case or gather evidence to help defend you in a criminal case.
