Receiving a summons before a judge makes many people nervous, and for good reason. You may be wondering if you’re going to go to jail, be sued, or lose a case that you filed. If you have retained the services of an expert lawyer, who has a deep understanding of your kind of case, then you have even more reason to be nervous. A good lawyer is on your side throughout the court process, from answering your questions about the summons information to giving you advice on how to answer questions from a judge. If you’re involved in a complicated civil case, one that involves finances or contracts, then a lawyer can help you gather the right paperwork to help your case.

Your Experience in Delaware County District Court

This particular court only hears civil cases, including traffic violations and landlord-tenant disputes. Examples of traffic cases that are heard here include reckless driving or DWI, running a stop sign or stop light, speeding more than 30 mph over the speed limit, and other similar violations. In these cases, it’s good to have a lawyer that can help reduce fines you owe or keep your driver’s license from building suspended.

If you’re a landlord seeking eviction or back payment of rent from a tenant, you may be in one of the small claims courts, where damages don’t exceed $12,000. Or, you might be involved in a minor lawsuit, where damages are under $12,000. If you’re the one being sued, or the tenant that’s having a case brought against them, hiring a lawyer may help you build a case where you don’t owe as much money.
