At Latoison Law, we’ve always believed in the strength of our roots. Our dedication to justice and community service runs deep, passed down through generations of relentless advocates and passionate defenders. Today, we paused to remember and honor one such pillar of our legacy, William H. Ridley, Esquire – the great, great grandfather of our Managing Partner and founder, Enrique Latoison, Esq.

On the sunny morning of September 19, 2023, an enthusiastic gathering assembled in front of our law firm building. The event? The unveiling of a commemorative plaque, a testament to the indomitable spirit and pioneering legacy of Attorney William H. Ridley.

However, the legacy doesn’t stop there. As we pulled the veil off the plaque, our eyes turned to a special guest, Dr. Sam Lemon. A revered historian and a guardian of the Black oral tradition, his contributions in documenting the remarkable life of Attorney Ridley serve as a beacon for future generations, illuminating a path of resilience and determination.

William Henry Ridley Esq. was not just a pioneering legal figure but also a product of the community he served. Born in the historic Minshall House located at Front Street and Providence Road, he was an exemplar of dedication from an early age. His educational journey led him to Media Public High School, where he graduated with honors in 1887. This foundation paved the way for a distinguished legal career that remarkably spanned 54 years. And in a monumental stride, Ridley shattered racial barriers when he became the first Black attorney admitted to the Delaware County Bar in 1871, setting an unparalleled precedent for generations to come.

The legacy of law and justice clearly runs deep in the family; Dr. Lemon’s commitment to preserving history echoes in the professional pursuits of both his daughter, a lawyer, and Enrique’s youngest son, who aspires to enter the realm of law.
