In Pennsylvania, college athletes are now able to make money from advertising, their looks, and their social media presence. This is a new development, as it used to be illegal, and students would lose their eligibility to play.
Due to changes in the law, college athletes can now make money just like professional athletes. Each state has its own rules, and Pennsylvania is no exception.
To make money as a college athlete in Pennsylvania, you must be enrolled in school. Also, you cannot participate in a pay-to-play scheme, as that is still illegal.
Outside companies can pay the athletes, not the universities. But that outside company can pay an athlete a fair market value to advertise on behalf of that product. This has evened the playing field for male and female athletes, as female athletes can use their likeness and ability to play sports to make money.
There are rules in Pennsylvania, such as not advertising things such as gambling, drugs, cigarettes, and other similar items. You must also check with the university to make sure there is no existing contract before signing with a company.
This opportunity is only for amateur athletes and cannot be used to obtain professional contracts. Even if a person doesn’t get involved with NIL, Pennsylvania says they still get a cut if the university sells jerseys with their name on it.
NIL representation attorneys, like Enrique Latosion, and managers are the only people allowed to work on behalf of amateur athletes in the NIL world in Pennsylvania. This is a new, emerging field, and it’s a very exciting time right now because it’s the first time athletes can make money while still being in college and not mess up their eligibility to play sports.
As already stated, NIL is a great chance for collegiate athletes of both sexes and all sports. Female athletes, like their male counterparts, can cash in on their skills and fame. With this legislation in place, male and female athletes are on equal footing, and both sexes have access to previously unavailable earning opportunities.
